The Standard
Workplace risks that arise from the decisions, actions, and behaviour of workers are termed people risks. People risks have the potential to cause physical and mental harm to workers, organizations, and the public—both directly and indirectly. Their intangible nature makes them more challenging to identify and remedy within the workplace.
While the concept of people risk is not new, our understanding of those risks and expectations for employer accountability are continuing to evolve. In the 1970's, occupational health and safety legislation brought new focus and control to physical threats facing workers and here in the 2000's we are addressing psychological and psychosocial risks.
Canada led the way with its publication of The National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (2013; 2022). It provided the goundwork for ISO's international standard and other national best practices. Now, it's up to employers and industry leaders to incorporate controls into their organizations.
It's no secret that the COVID pandemic changed the way we work. It also brought to light the burgeoning mental health issues facing workers. After 20 years of social media and the virtual elimination of boundaries between work life and home life, the effects are taking a toll. Need a few reasons for looking at people risks in your organization? Here's our top five.
The national economy is hit hard by workplace mental health issues and the costs keep rising. Organizations are being crippled by mental health disability claims, lost productivity, and ballooning overhead. A strategic approach to addressing risks can reduce the financial impact of workplace mental health issues and strengthen business and the economy.
Expectations for employers are continuing to evolve and are guided by social norms and government legislation. As the benchmark continues to rise, savvy organizations are taking the time to demonstrate their duty to care and add a layer of protection to their operations.
Competition is fierce and having a defined approach for managing people risks in your organization sets you appart from the rest. It shows potential clients that your organization is forward thinking, capable of continuous improvement, and invested in systemic performance enhancement.
Reputation matters and it is something that impacts leaders, organizations, and industries as a whole. Addressing people risk in business shows clients and the public genuine concern for workers—and that goes a long way in bolstering reputation.
Implementing people risk management practices into organizational systems becomes more challenging as organizations grow. Just like planting a tree, the best time is now.
